At least 24 people dead as Southern California wildfires continue: officials

California authorities have confirmed that 24 have died as wildfires continue to rage around Los Angeles on Sunday. Meanwhile, Gov. Gavin Newsom is facing criticism for approving a budget that slashed $100 million in firefighting and fire prevention funding.

California authorities announced on Sunday that at least 24 people have died as a result of the recent wildfires.

16 people were killed in the Eaton Fire, while 8 others died in the Palisades Fire.

The previous figure was 16 deaths in total. According to the County of Los Angeles Department of Medical Examiner’s (DME) website, many of the decedents are John or Jane Does.

“The DME cannot confirm human remains until after the DME processes them at our facility,” the agency noted.
