Renowned talk-show host and health expert, Dr. Mehmet Oz, credits much of his success to his wife, Lisa Oz. For nearly four decades, Lisa has been his rock, offering wisdom and support in good times and bad.

From a rocky first date to an unconventional proposal, their early days were filled with moments that hinted at the unique bond they would later share. What began as a bumpy start has blossomed into a partnership that blends romance, family, and professional collaboration.

The couple’s first meeting was arranged by their parents, both of whom thought the pair might be a good match. Mehmet’s father, a friend of Lisa’s dad, orchestrated a dinner where the two first crossed paths. However, the meeting was anything but smooth.
When Mehmet arrived at the restaurant, Lisa mistook him for the maître d’. “I thought, ‘Wow, that waiter is so hot,'” she recalled humorously. But any chance for sparks was dampened when Mehmet spent the entire evening focused on her mother instead of her.

Far from an oversight, it was part of Mehmet’s calculated plan. “If I get Mom to buy into me as a reasonable suitor, I can get Lisa to come on a date with me,” he later explained.
Start: First Dates and Big Demands
After their unconventional introduction, Lisa agreed to go on a date with Mehmet—but it didn’t go as smoothly as one might hope. Mehmet, unaware of Lisa’s dietary preferences, chose a steakhouse for their first outing.
What seemed like a thoughtful choice turned into a comedic mishap when Lisa revealed, “This is so nice of you. Thank you so much, I really appreciate it… I’m a vegetarian.” Mehmet wasn’t deterred by the awkwardness, and Lisa’s upfront attitude began to make an impression.
Early on, she made her expectations clear. When Mehmet asked her for another date, Lisa set a boundary. “Do you want to go out next weekend?” he asked to which she replied, “Only if you don’t have any other dates because I’m only dating you if you’re not dating anyone else.”
Though Mehmet initially thought the demand was “clingy,” he was intrigued by her directness and honesty. Their early courtship had its share of bumps, but those moments laid the groundwork for their unique relationship.

The Proposal: A Soda Can Tab and Forever
After months of dating, Mehmet knew he couldn’t imagine life without Lisa. But before they reached that realization, their relationship hit a rough patch. They had a heated argument that led to a temporary breakup, and for a moment, it seemed their story might end there.
However, Mehmet soon recognized that Lisa was the person he wanted by his side forever. In a heartfelt and impromptu gesture, Mehmet chased Lisa down the street after their fight. Spotting a soda can tab on the ground, he picked it up and used it to propose.
Their marriage marked the start of the partnership that has spanned nearly four decades, blending love, family, and professional collaboration.
While Mehmet became a household name, Lisa played a pivotal role behind the scenes, helping to shape and sustain his media empire. From the beginning, Lisa’s insight and creativity proved instrumental in launching and managing the career that turned Mehmet into one of the most recognizable doctors in the world.

Her work extended into broadcasting as well, where she served as a radio host and co-hosted the podcast “You Turns.” The show, aimed at helping people navigate life’s changes, exemplified Lisa’s dedication to empowering others.
The Oz Family Legacy: Four Children, Four Paths
Their marriage has been the foundation for a close-knit and accomplished family. Together, they have raised four children, each of whom has pursued unique and successful careers.
Daphne Oz, their eldest daughter, was born in 1986 and has followed in her parents’ footsteps by carving out a career in media. A food writer, chef, and television host, Daphne gained fame as a co-host on ABC’s “The Chew” and later on “The Good Dish.”
Zoe Yasemin Oz has ventured into the corporate world as the chief marketing officer of Bilt Rewards. Her entrepreneurial achievements have gained significant attention, especially in 2022, when her company was valued at $1.5 billion.
Arabella Sezen Oz, the youngest of the four, has taken a different route as an actress. After graduating from Columbia University, Arabella built a career in film. She has credits in productions such as “When Starlight Ends,” “Stalker’s Prey,” and “Billionaire Boys Club.”
Unlike her siblings, Arabella keeps a relatively low profile, staying off social media and out of the spotlight. The Oz legacy extends beyond their children, as the couple are also proud grandparents. With their tight-knit setup, the family has overcome many challenges together.
Mehmet has been through many highs and lows in his career, but Lisa has been a steadfast source of support. One of the most challenging moments came in April 2015, when a group of physicians publicly called for his dismissal from Columbia University, questioning his medical credibility.

While Mehmet addressed the controversy head-on through an op-ed and televised responses, it was Lisa who anchored him during the storm. “She’s the best. She rubs my head. She gives me ideas. She calms me down,” Mehmet stated. Her wisdom and perspective helped him navigate the crisis.
Whether providing perspective during challenging times or shaping his media empire with her creative contributions, Lisa has always been an indispensable part of their partnership.
